Used car rejection

Hello,

We bought a used car last week, had to call out RAC after two days, brought car to local garage for small repair, now garage have found several faults and believe the car to have been in an undeclared accident. We believe the best option is to reject the car. Could anyone advise on how best to proceed? Many thanks.

Make, model, age, mileage, price paid please :)

But several things in the meantime
    * A dealer doesnt have to declare if the car has had paintwork, so thats not grounds for rejection
    * Is the accident repair of a standard that allows the car to pass MOT & be roadworthy? If so, thats not grounds for rejection
    * "local garages" are almost wholly doom and gloom merchants so take their "advice" with a pinch of salt.

The supplying dealer should be rectifying any faults at this stage. You shouldnt not be authorising a local garage to carry out repairs unless you're happy to pay for them yourself.
  • Thank you.
Car hasn’t been touched by garage. Faults include ‘incorrect suspension arm fitted,’ oil leak from engine, cracking filler in both nearside doors.
    It’s a VW Touran, 2010, paid £6800, mileage 60000.

Should we get a new MOT done? I’m not convinced it would pass, although it came with a new MOT.

Garages make their profits by finding faults, finding a poor repair job to the nearside doors has nothing to do with the MOT.

I would be very surprized a "suspension arm" could be the wrong one, if you want another test, why not speak to the original MOT tester or take take it to a council MOT testing station.
  • The local garage is not trying to make any profit and indeed said it would be best for them not to carry out any repairs.

Suspension arms are also usually consumables, with replacement of the entire arm the cheapest and best way to replace worn bushes.

And if the filler is cracking and falling out of the doors, why was that not noticed before purchase?

It's an 8yo car. Is it reasonable to expect an 8yo car to have had minor accident repair in the past? Yes, absolutely.

A bit of panel damage to two doors is hardly a safety issue either and neither would it be a MOT test fail even if you drove the car across the corner of a skip and there were massive creases down each door as long as there were no sharp edges protruding.

  • Do a HPI check - if its a previous wrote off you maybe able to return car, not then its just an unrecorded accident so that wont go anywhere.
