Can anyone help I've just been giving a written warning...

  • On the bright side, if your colleges have time off, they will also get a formal letter and they wont be able to accuse your manager of giving you preferential treatment just because you came in early. Its fair for all. Whole point of the policy.
  • Absence policies tend to cover both the number of absences and the overall time off (by no of days or percentage or similar) so generally having a long time off attracts some level of action just like having 3 separate 1 day absences.

Also check your handbook and or contract, sometimes a written warning has other consequences around things like bonuses and pay rises.

You seem to think that being "only" 32 is some sort of excuse. In my book, being 32 means you've probably been working for around 10 years so you should have a pretty good idea how things work, and if you don't then I'll echo the suggestion given by custardy in post #8.
  • My only 32 comment was meant to say after it "I'm only 32,but I wish things would go back to when they were more old school' you got a bollocking and a bit of stick from the lads and that was it.

To many soppy office pansies in here obviously that just want to brown nose the one above them. 'well if your policy says this or that or go eat oranges everyday than you must do it'.

If you want to be paid then yes, you do need to follow the policy, or find another job with policies that you fully agree with. You're coming off as a petulant brat, which makes custardy's advice even more pertinent.

How would you feel if a colleague (for example) breached health & safety rules and as result, you broke another rib and ended up off work again - and all they got was a "bollocking and a bit of stick from the lads" as opposed to the breach being properly addressed?

Whatever. The number of new posters who come in here, ask for advice and then lash out when people tell them something other than what they want to hear is pretty amazing. Perhaps there should be a specific forum for people who just want to be told they're right, even when they're not...

If you want to have a go at anyone about "stupid policies" then go and vent your spleen at your colleagues and former employees of your company - guaranteed that the absence policy was introduced because too many of them were taking the !!!! when it was a trust based system.

Just to be clear - these policies were all introduced on the back of an unfair dismissal claim put in by two manual workers who got treated, as you phrase it, "old school". The employer knew they were taking the proverbial and sacked them, but had allowed other people more time off sick because they knew it was genuine.

Not a "soppy office pansy" in sight, you mediocre untalented brute.

You've already made it clear that now you know that policy is in place, you intend to use that knowledge to pull sickies. It's people like you that have created this situation.
  • And it's people like you who thrive on policy's and gossip and paperwork. I'd love to see pencil pushers like yourselves do a real days work.
  • Presumably your Fit Note for the rib injury expired on the Sunday, if you were going back to work on the Monday. Then you would had to self-certify your sickness from the stomach bug on Monday. Hence two absences.
