I'm looking for a single size memory foam mattress, with open cell construction. Would like any impartial advice if possible. I'm around 11 stone and (think) i sleep more on my side.
I've found this: http://www.mattress24.co.uk/product/Flexcell%20700-175
I also need a bedstead, ideally with sprung slats, for under £150, and wondering which is best, out of wood, metal, leather, faux leather or upholstered.
I've found this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330181672162&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching (faux leather with sprung slats)

If you are after reflex foam/memory foam or open coil sprung/memory foam, then there are loads of singles available on ebay for far less than £250.
As for the bed base it depends on the type of mattress you go for and personal taste. However it can work out far cheaper buying a complete divan set (base and mattress) together.0 -
I'm not really looking for a divan, i'm an asthma sufferer, the memory foam looks better because its dust-mite free, I also have limited space.
I'm trying to avoid ebay as a lot of the mattresses are non-branded and sometimes more expensive than a lot of other websites.
Does anyone have any experience of the previously posted items?0 -

Don't be fooled into paying loads by well known brand names. There must be 100's of memory foam mattress manufacturers out there, and many of them are just as good (if not better) than many of the very expensive big brands.
Just for example many people by beds and mattresses made by a very well known company begining with 'S'. The truth is that the quality of the products made by the company in question is terrible.
The things to check for with any memory foam mattress are as follows:
1) The mattress should be made up from at least 2 internal layers. Memory foam doesn't give you any bounce, so there should be a layer of either springs or reflex foam, then there is usually just one layer of memory foam on top, although occasionally you will find a 2 sided memory foam mattress. If you find people advertising mattresses as 'reflex memory foam', and they aren't made up from layers, then this is a con.
2) The memory foam should be between 2" and 2.5" deep. Less than this and it won't be deep enough to contour to your body, but more than this and the mattress can engulf you, thus making you too hot, and restricting your movement.
3) The optimum density of the memory foam is around 65kg per m3 although it is down to personal preference, but 55kg is really the lowest end of the recommended range.
I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:
a) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
b) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller.
c) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the righ choice because it will cost them if you return it).
d) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.
e) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).
Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.

Do you sell beds on Ebay by any chance?
You must be one of very few people on here who don't know I sell beds on ebay, but then so do 100's of other people, so it's not as if I'm going to attract more customers by suggesting ebay is it?
If I was trying to attract customers on here I would do what a few other members have done (pretend to be a satisfied customer when promoting a site), but I'm not pushing my web site am I?
Beds are one of the few things that you can still make huge genuine savings on by buying through ebay just as long as you follow the guidelines above.0 -

Online companies come and go (not talkling about, say Argos,Currys,Comet-the well known ones.)
E-Bay online companies are worse, loads of fly-by night operators. their one minuite, gone the next.
So you buy a bed from an unknown place, on price only, then 6 months down the line, it develops a fault, so you contact the seller, only to find u cant cause hes dissapeared, or if you want to use the "Sale of goods act", say 3 years down the line-only again to find hes not there, and has probably used the oldest trick in the book and has change his name to something else.
I have bought loads of stuff from e-bay and got good deals, but i would never again buy something large/expensive on price only, it just aint woth the worry:o:o0 -

I can see your point.......except for a couple major points: the ebay seller is rarely the manufacturer, and the guarantee should be with the manufacturer. If my company closed tomorrow, then all of our customers would still be covered by the manufacturers warranty.
Also if you are buying anything expensive then it would be silly not to do a bit of research:
1) Ask for the sellers company number, registered address, and VAT number.
2) Check their ebay history to see how long they have been trading, and check their feeback right back to when they started.
3) Are they a power seller?
4) Ask previous buyers what they think of the seller and the products.
5) Allways make sure you can get a land line phone number, and actually talk to the seller.
6) Don't buy seconds that have had their labels removed, as these won't be covered by the manufacturers warranty.
7) Check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.
8) Try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).
9) Most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
I'd also like to remind you that large companies also go bust, like Furnitureland, Courts.....etc.
If you purchase extended warranty then this is usually through an insurance company, not the actual seller.
When I tried to get a faulty sofa either repaired or replaced at DFS, they told me that they couldn't fix it so they would have to replace it. They then said that because it had been used for 18 months (the guarantee was for 2 years, and the fault was first reported after just 2 months) then I would have to pay a huge lump of the replacement.
There are a few dodgy sellers on ebay, but there are also many on the high street, but please don't tar us all with the same brush. If you stick to the guide lines that I have given, then you should be perfectly safe shopping on ebay.
Many people are wary about internet based companies, and think that if they can sell so cheap, then there must be a catch. The truth is that they sell so cheap because they don't have the overheads of running a showroom.0 -
This mattress looks a lot like this......http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320179224268&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011I'm looking for a single size memory foam mattress, with open cell construction.
