Can I claim on cancelled PPI

Just after some advice, I've had a look on the other threads on this forum too but can't quite seem to find the answer. So sorry if this has been asked tons of times, spent several hours looking but I must just keep missing the relevant thread so apologies in advance.
I cancelled my cardholder repayment protection with Egg Credit Card back in December 2006 after my (now) husband asked me why I was paying it as I had sickness/accident and disability cover as part of another insurance policy. I had absolutely no recollection of taking the cover out with Egg, it was a surprise to me as to what it even was - I naively assumed it was something every credit card had - just like with interest payments so I'd just ignored it...how daft was I!!
At the time of cancelling I wasn't aware that you could claim back for anything like this, so as annoyed as I was I just cancelled the policy and moved on. Egg has of course since gone, and was taken over by Barclay Card, and I have just recently paid the balance of the card off.
It's only recently that someone mentioned that I should try and reclaim the PPI as I didn't know what it was that I was paying for etc. I'm really not sure what to do, or whether anyone would even acknowledge my claim as I cancelled it. I still feel pretty miffed that I was paying for something that I didn't need, but really don't know where I would stand - or who I would even approach as Egg are no longer trading and I'd cancelled before Barclay Card took over from Egg.
Figured a fair few of you on here would be much more knowledgeable on this than me, so wondered what your thoughts were?

You can complain about (though not claim on) a cancelled policy.
It's unlikely Bcard would still have records after all this time, especially under GDPR, but you may get lucky.0 -
If you cancelled it they can (and probably will) time bar the complaint.
You have 6 years from taking out a product and 3 years from knowing there was an issue (which cancelling counts as) to raise a complaint - whichever is longer. After that the case is time barred from any complaints. You'd be hoping to get lucky that either they investigate anyway or don't notice that it was cancelled already.Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

That's almost twelve years ago.I cancelled my cardholder repayment protection with Egg Credit Card back in December 2006
I'd be very surprised if Canada Square or Barclaycard still have any records of this.
Do you have proof of how much you paid towards this policy in your own archive?
If not, I doubt you'll have any success.

As your Egg Card was transferred to Barclaycard a good starting point would be
https://www.fca.org.uk/ppi/contact-egg-credit-card
If your complaint about mis-selling of PPI is rejected, you may still be able to make a PPI commission complaint if you took your PPI out before 6 April 2007 and your credit account was still open on or after 6 April 2008 (even if you had stopped using it).0 -
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your feedback, it's been incredibly helpful. I definitely need to go away and explore this a little further with Barclaycard and see where we go from there. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.0
