Afternoon all, I'd like some advice please.

In 1996/1997 I took out a loan from my bank (HSBC). I no longer have this account. I paid it off within a few years, and don't have any paperwork for it now. I don't remember being asked about PPI or any extras, but how would I know if I fell into the 'we'll add it without being asked' category?

So I've just found the "PPI template letter" on here to send to HSBC. I remember my account number, so is that enough for them to go on?

Also do I send it to the PPI complaints address in Coventry (as per the sticky) or take it into the branch (as per posts on the sticky)?

I appreciate these are basic questions, thanks in advance for your help :)

If you have a complaint re the PPI, send it to the complaints address on their website.

The 'added it without being asked' reason doesn't generally work, as it means you didn't read anything you signed or any statements. So perhaps something stronger.

The account number may or may not be enough, but if that's all you have, then that's all you have.

Also - don't use a template. Use your own complaint reasons.

And keep your expectations very low. After 20 years, the records should have been long destroyed.
  • Thank you for your quick reply zx81.

I've umm'd and ahh'd over doing it for a while now. My loan was (I think around) £3k, so I'm not going to get back big money ha haa!

I asked in my branch some time ago; they said to forget it as there'll be no records. I mentioned it again when I closed the account a couple of years ago, the woman said "we'll you can always try and here's an address but don't hold your breath". The address is different to the one on the sticky, it's a Bristol address. Anyway, I never bothered. Now with Martin's emails being all about the deadline it's niggling me so I thought I'd ask you wise owls.

I thought them adding it after the fact was a reason in itself? Would asking for my original agreement be a waste of time too do you think?

ETA - I've read on here of success stories from around the same length of time ago and longer, if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be considering it....

possibly they gave you the address for the SAR people - send them a request for all your data (SAR) and see what they have left, this is free now so worth a gamble. Would at least confirm if there are any records left.

People who had success after long periods usually got lucky on old archives being kept, their own records or because they were still an active customer

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It's a reason - just not a very credible one.
  • Thanks Nasqueron.

With very low expectations, and without holding my breath, I'll give that a try.

    Thank you both :)

It would be yes but it simply didn't happen, particularly with banks who were regulated at the time. Any PPI etc is listed on the loan agreement. If they added PPI after, your loan amount would be higher or you'd have higher payments and you'd immediately notice and ask why so there is no reason for them to do it because they'd be caught immediately.
