Smart meter

I'm with British Gas, I've received a text message from them an engineer will be in my area to upgrade my normal meter to smart meter if I require it. Do I say reply to it or forget?

I expect that the latest smart meters that BG are fitting are SMETS2 or SMETS1 meters which are capable of being adopted into the DCC when it is supposed to be going live between Nov 2018 and June 2019.
Suitable BG meters are Landis Gyr E470 electric meters and G470 and G370 smart gas meters. These meters will be operating in SMETS2 and capable of smart switching once the DCC go s live, whenever that actually is !
Once the DCC finally go s live I expect the anti smart meter lot will have to find another weak excuse for refusing one rather than the smart switching concerns
.EMF radiation ? Hacking concerns ? there`s a few others to use yet

If you do not want a smart meter, you need to phone British Gas and tell them, and ask them to note that in your account and give you written confirmation.

If you simply forget about it, an engineer is likely to come without notice and try to force a smart meter on you.

"An engineer who will be in your area" is one of the ploys the energy firms use on customers to "upgrade" to a smart meter.

This post links to an article that describes some of the energy firm ploys.

Smart meters do not result in cheaper bills for consumers.

It is the exact opposite. The British Infrastructure Group of Parliamentarians reported on the smart meters programme in July 2018, and stated that the consumers have been and will continue to pay higher bills to fund the entire 11 billion pound smart meters programme, with no guarantee of seeing any savings in the future.

There is more public awareness of the real costs and issues with smart meters, so the energy companies are having to resort to dirty tricks to force consumers to take smart meters.
