Hi,

Does anyone actually own a 1.6 petrol Hyundai Tucson, if so what real world average fuel consumption are you getting please?

Thanks.

Sites such as this give a good indication

Thanks! that is interesting. As I suspected, the large amount of them on the market are ex-hire cars, they buy cheaper petrol ones as fuel consumption isn't their problem but its not too good.

35mpg? Seems about right (if even a little high for such a big heavy car)

From that site for my car, a MK4 Mondeo:

    Real MPG 23–62
    Average 43.3

With a range of 39MPG between best and worst it makes that site as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Depending on the kind of journey you do the average figure could be way out too. I do hardly any town driving and tank after tank after tank for the last 100,000 miles I've done in it I've exceeded 50MPG.

Thats because you're looking at the headline banner across the range, not the specific engine type you have.

Drill down in to your particular variant and the figure will be more accurate, for example a 1.8TDCI / 1.8TDCI 100 show on average 46mpg and 49.9mpg, whereas the 2.5T variant is showing 28.6mpg.

Not hard to see why the headline spread is so wide?

Everyone has a different driving style though, that's why there's a specific test required for the official figures (though it's so far removed from real world conditions that it's useless).

    Agreed :)

Though the honest john figures for each specific variant are usually not that far away from what you'll actually get, so a much better basis than the official figures.

Not just driving style but journey types and the weather. I had to take the inlaws to appointments. So had a lot of very short journeys. Stop start in fairly busy traffic and averaged less than 30mpg for a 2L diesel..
A good sprinkle of snow didn't help. Engine running to warm it up whilst i scraped the snow off equals zero mpg.

Yet the same car exceeded 60mpg on the journey home after filling up late one night with very little traffic around and 57mpg fully loaded on a trip to the coast and back.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • It gives a fair idea, as I suspected there is a 10mpg deficit to the diesel, which used like for like costs about £500 more.

Over 3 years, 30,000 miles the fuel would cost £1000 less for diesel so worth avoiding the petrol in this case.

    cheers

I think the (very obvious) trick is to not just look at individual journies but to average out over at least an entire tankful, or ideally several.

I think generally speaking the figures on HJ arent a million miles away. They say 28MPG for an A45, we get 27. They say 38mpg for a Cooper S, i get 34, but then i've a lead right foot and it is modded.

All fuel consumption figures - whether averages from other people or official figures need to be taken with a big pinch of salt. Personally i'd assume slightly worse than the average on HJ and do my figures from there and see if i could live with it.
