E.on WTH!

So i've been with E.on since 16 August 2018. Monthly direct debit was set to £55, I changed it to £50. Now it's almost end of september, They cancelled my direct debit because it failed twice, But before they attempted the second direct debit, I paid £55 by card, So that should have cancelled out any second direct debit attempt!

Now they want to cancel and put the monthly price to £80, So it's went from £72, 75 then £77 over the last weeks. It's a one bedroom flat with 1 single person living in it, Who basically lives in one room! How the hell can they justify £80 a month when my mum's house is a full house 3 bed room house with 2 people living there. Seems like e.on are at it, And it's getting on my nerves that they can think they can justify this price.

Currently on E.ON Smart Saver v5. I feel like i've made a horrible mistake moving to E.ON from EDF! Not getting good vibes from this company already.

Not happy

I can understand your annoyance but you are confusing monthly DD payments with charges for energy used. DD payments are nothing more than payments which are put into a ‘piggy bank’ from which charges - based on your actual usage and the agreed tariff - are taken. The more energy that you use, the higher the charges will be. If you disagree with the estimated annual usage that E.oN has calculated, then you can adjust your monthly payment on E.oN’s website.

If your flat has electric on-demand heating, and your mums house has gas, it's quite plausible the flat would have a bigger bill.

    Just a thought.
You've not been with them long, but when you signed up did you give them your previous years consumption or just what you'd previously been paying?

Sounds like the initial estimate was low and they've been able to get historic usage values since taking over your supply and have pre-emptively increased the direct debit in anticipation of another cold winter.

Estimated Annual Consumption calculations are at best an algorithmic guess. We moved into a new build 2 months ago. Our new property is much better insulated; it is smaller than our previous home and all the appliances are rated 'A'. Rather than come up with a fudge, I gave my supplier my previous usage projections of 4500kWhs/year for electricity and 10000kWh/year for gas.

As electricity tends not to vary that much day by day (particularly, with LED lights), it is not surprising that my estimated annual usage after two months is not far below what I estimated. Gas, on the other hand, is way off. At the moment, we are using an average of 4.3kWhs/day which according to my supplier's algorithm equates to estimated usage of 15,560kWhs/Year. The e-mail changing my DD payment included this statement:

Quote: Every UK home has an official estimate, based on historical meter readings. We've now received this from your previous supplier, and it looks like you're using more energy than your initial estimate. Unquote

Clearly, my new home has had a previous life! By way of comparison, the Full SAP EPC for my new home suggests a total heat demand of 7800kWhs/year for space and water heating. The answer is to agree a more sensible DD amount with the supplier. I accept that this isn't always possible.

    Morning paragon909,

Thank you Hengus and all on the thread.

I'd like to try and explain a bit for you.

The Direct Debit will be cancelled if it fails to collect the payments, this is a different payment method to making payments manually on to an account, so the Direct Debit won't know about the payments you’ve made.

We're now coming in to the winter months and when you pay by a monthly Direct Debit we expect the account to be in credit, as this credit will go towards to larger winter bills.

It's very hard to compare one property to another as there are so many factors involved.

What I would do, is make sure the account is up to date, pop some reads on to your online account and produce a real time bill or balance, then you know exactly where you stand at this point.

Then decide how you would like to pay, if you would like a Direct Debit again, we may have to set this up for you, if you're unable to do it on the website.

If you do decide to have Direct Debit, you can then use the Direct Debit manager tool on the website. This lets you manage your payments and increase or decrease by 20% with reads and 5% without reads.

As you haven't been with us long, we won't have built up a picture of your usage over a 12 month period as yet, so the more reads you can provide the more accurate the Direct Debit will be.

    Hope this helps a little.

  • I only really use the bedroom in the flat as thats where my computer and tv etc is... My living room does have a TV and sky box and all other stuff but never sit in there as i find no use for it really!

Heating is barely on and if it is, It's set to max temp in boiler and turned off after 10 mins cause house is roasting, It's gas central heating. Cooker etc is electric.

Not gave E.on any further readings as it says on my account we don't need them yet. Not sure how they are getting this £80 figure.

I agree with the general principle of regular readings to get accurate statements and DD's but what is the explanation from E.on as to why there should be 4 different DD's from them in less than 5 weeks. No wonder OP is confused.

OP don't wait for requests for readings read your meter at least every month and keep your own records.

Can you give us meter readings please as per my earlier request.

Was the Smart meter installed by a previous supplier ? it yes - its no longer Smart and relies on you taking readings.

    Hi paragon909,

Thank you very much for the extra information.

From what I can see, you joined in August this year and you've made one payment of £55 to the account, we haven't yet billed you.

As we don't have actual usage for you yet, as you've only been with us a short time, we're estimating what we think you'll use.

Do keep in mind that a Direct Debit works by spreading payments as evenly as possible over a full 12 months. The aim is for accounts to have as close as possible to a zero balance by the annual review.

As we're moving in to winter the payments may be higher at the moment as you'll use more, this should then even out as we get more accurate usage in kWh.

Please do speak to us and let us have the details of the setup of your property, or you could chose to pay a different way.

There’s lots of information on the website as well, that I'm sure will be helpful to you.

    Thank you
