Council housing - How long did you wait

Good afternoon all,

If you have recently, say over the last two years, been offered a place with the local authority (standard accommodation / no adaptations) - would you mind answering..

How long did you wait?
What band were you in?

Looking for actual real life experiences on the above questions - not the official lines etc..... realistic wait times from real people who have been through it, and wondered what my area, along with the rest of the Uk was looking like...

Just looking for real life experiences and wait times - Genuinely don't need any further info or help - I am pretty well researched on the topic as far as official channels go
...........................................................................
I have started a thread on this, in the housing board, but no one seems able to answer the questions in bold, just pretty much cutting and pasting official stuff, all of which I know as am well researched however our council do not publicise wait times

Many thanks x
With love, POSR <3

  • Good luck with your answers because this question is very similar to the question - "how long is a piece of string?"

It might be helpful to include a littloe bit more information such as rough area of the country and size of property.

A four bedroom house on the south coast is going to take longer to get than a two bedroom flat in Liverpool.

My sister waited 3 years for a 2 bedroom council house in North Lanarkshire. She was eventually given more points as her current house was deemed uninhabitable though.
  • Which thread do you want the answers?

I stay in Scotland, I was on the housing list as a single person with no health conditions.... I stayed with my mum, Had my own room as it was a 3 bedroom house. Was on list from the February, From then I got offered 3 houses. I took the 3rd on 27th July 2015! And lowest band btw.

So rather quick for me, Although I want a transfer to a 2 bedroom house, But ill be waiting sometime for that i think.

I'm past 1st year on council list
Possibly delayed as I moved to another town and want to return to original town.
I have m.s. work part time claim pip/wtc.
I plane to sell my flat if and when I get offered a council flat.
I have some points on list, though I've been told due to no one moving there isn't the turnaround of council properties to let for rental in effect the list is growing and not progressing at all.
Maybe 2019 will bring luck though possibly not.

I am in north lanarkshire and I applied as a single person. I was so far down the housing list (in the thousands), that I took a hard to let area. There are very few spare council houses in my end of north lanarkshire as a single person unless you take a home in an area that isn't easy to let. There are huge waiting lists here.
  • my mother in law was offered a place while still completing application. why? because it is a very hard let - 2 bed sheltered accommodation - nobody wanted bedroom tax (doesn't affect her due to age), and she was not fussy, just wanted to retire at 73 and not carry on working

but like others have said, dependant on area, circumstances, needs, etc each case is on its own merit
  • I was on the list for a couple of weeks before being offered a place...my mother was offered a place after just a couple of days...

We were both placed at the top of the list due to individual specific health needs....also we both were looking for one-room places (much easier to house a singleton than a family of 6!)

I am aware on one area where people have been on the list for 3 years and more...and 'emergency accommodation' is found for some and 2 years later they are still in the 'emergency' housing.

No-one can give an actual waiting period figure - because every case is different.
