Council housing - how long did you wait?

Good afternoon all,


If you have recently, say over the last two years, been offered a place with the local authority (standard accommodation / no adaptations) - would you mind answering..


How long did you wait?
What band were you in?

Edited to add - Looking for actual real life experiences on the above questions - not the official lines etc..... realistic wait times from real people who have been through it, and wondered what my area, along with the rest of the Uk was looking like...

Just looking for real life experiences and wait times - Genuinely don't need any further info and trying to help a vulnerable person who looks to me for help. But I genuinely do not know what to advise them.

The ex and I went on the council housing list in 1976. For all I know we might still be on it.

Back in the 90s when I joined, I was housed pretty quick, within 3-4 months


However it seems it is more like years now

It depends where you are and what you will accept.
And it's not just about your banding. It often depends how good your support worker is etc.

If you wish to find out how long it will be for you (YOU!) in your circumstances in your local council best get a look at local council website.


Depending on what banding/priority you have then it may be years, decades or never.


Of course if homeless and passing the 5 key tests you'll be housed quicker: But maybe in a homeless hostel or B&B or a 1 or 2 year private let.

True. Most things accepted, the person who I am helping, they are bidding the max amount of bids each week all areas, and have letters from health care specialists to support

It is very urgent, it is causing massive health issues for them, genuine issues , awful to watch

If they need a special type of accommodation, for wheelchair etc, that's a different matter.

Yes that is true. No adaptations req

They should contact councillors, MP, CaB

I waited a little over 4 years.


I am surprised your council is not open about how long it takes, perhaps you are asking the wrong person/question?
