Dealing with family debt

Hi
I need advice, 6 months ago my brother left to go to China, he has always worked but is a bit of a compulsive liar. A few weeks ago a person started coming to my parents house looking for him and leaving a letter. The house belongs to my parents but as it’s his last known address with the DVLA they come here, unfortunately we opened the door to who we thought were a delivery and he wanted to take things so we then ended up paying £600 for him to not take the family stuff, it then happened again, thinking it was a delivery we opened the door and the guy although polite wouldn’t take his foot out until we either let him come in or pay him. I ended up paying, we keep on having people come now and don’t know what to do for the better! My brother is not going to back but it’s unfair that me and my family have to pay out our pockets and of money I can’t afford to spend. Please help - thank u in advance x

Can bailiffs do this? It doesn't sound very above board to me. If they come round again and put their foot in the front door I'd be on the phone to the Police.

They cannot enter the premises unless you open a door to them or leave a window open.
You are not obliged to let them in.
You are not responsible for your brothers debts. Any further visits, do not open the doors.
Any further letters to him, send back with 'not known at this address' or similar.

You do not have to pay them anything, and if they attempt to take items in future you need to provide recipts to show they are your possessions, not his. SO, DO NOT let them in.
Shampoo? No thanks, I'll have real poo...

    Hi,

You need to help yourself here.

Why on earth would you pay a debt thats not yours ?

This is questionable on so many levels, who were these people you paid , did they say who they were, did they show ID ? Have you got receipts for these payments ?

You are not liable for anyone elses debts, although by paying, you accept liability by default.

If, they were bailiffs, they cannot enter your home except through an open door, you should of called the police once youd told them the person they were after was not there, and they would not leave.

    Dont pay anyone else.

  • You shouldn't pay anything ,they can't take anything that doesn't belong to him.as it's your parents house I doubt that he has any possessions in it ?

Get a spyhole put in your front door and don't open it until you know who's outside.
  • Did you get a receipt for the monies paid? Or do you have any record or proof of the people who you paid money to?

Whoever they are, by paying them you are encouraging them to repeat that behaviour.
