Electoral Roll & Council Tax

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently seperated from my wife and am in the process of moving into a rental and eventually buying my own place. The ‘marital home’ has already been transferred over to the wife. It’s all amicable btw, and we get on.
My question is, is it possible that I can stay on the Electrol Roll in the ‘marital home’ while paying council tax in the new rental? The reason I’d like to do this is that when I apply for a mortgage, my name is on the address that I’ve lived in for over 10 years instead on a new address I would have only been in for a few months.
I want my credit file to show that I have the best possible chance of getting a mortage.
I will appreciate any advice.

  • The discrepancy would distinctly worsen your chances of getting a mortgage. At worst, a CIFAS marker.

Get it changed and improve your chances.

You'll need to put down both addresses on the application form, so they'll see (a) you're on the electoral role at the right place and (b) previous to this you've lived at a single address for a long time.
    Sounds fine to me.

Keeping any sort of financial/official connection to the old property can cause issues when the council undertake discount reviews and find a name still connected with the address.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
