Paypal Credit to pay for something outside ebay?

Hi, I have agreed to buy some music equipment and the seller wants paypal payment. I'm buying with a group of 4 of us. I am the only one lacking funds and am trying to use the only available credit to me (no cards) paypal credit.

It appears I cannot send money for a purchase to the vendor using paypal credit. Is the only way this can work, the vendor creates an actual ebay listing and I buy it through there?

thanks in advance.

it is a limited use form of credit yet also widely available. You can use paypal credit on a lot of sites that accept paypal payments. What you can not do though is send money to people using it, transfer it to your bank account or use it for small purchases I believe.

That is not a bad idea. It is a very good option.

You can't buy 1/4 share of something on eBay using paypal (credit or otherwise).

the seller would have to list on eBay something which is worth about 1/4 of the total and you buy that outright and the others buy the rest.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think PayPal Credit is only able to be used for purchases made using PayPal, and not if you simply wanted to send money to someone via PayPal.

If you want to complete the sale outside of eBay (which I wouldn't recommend) you could ask the seller to issue you an invoice through PayPal for 1/4 the listing price. You should then be able to pay using your PayPal Credit as normal - I'm not sure how buyer protection would work in this situation however, so proceed with caution

    The FAQ is here:
    5. Can I transfer money to family and friends or my bank account using my PayPal Credit?

Currently, your PayPal Credit limit cannot be used to send money to friends and family or to deposit funds into your bank account.

    [...]

    7. Can I use my PayPal Credit for “Invoice" or "Money Request”?

PayPal Credit will not be available as a funding source to pay an invoice or money request sent via PayPal.

I think it's only possible to use PayPal Credit online with websites that accept PayPal as a method of payment. It can be used for ebay purchases:
Can I use PayPal Credit for eBay purchases?

There are some purchases which PayPal Credit can’t be used for. In these cases, it either won’t be shown as a payment method or the payment won’t be authorised. Examples of this include using PayPal Credit to pay for purchases in a foreign currency or purchases of restricted product types. It may also be that some action is needed on your PayPal Credit account, for example if you have missed payments.

Getting the seller to list the equipment on ebay might be an option, if they're willing to go through that process.
  • Do your mates trust you enough to stump up a bit extra until you can afford to pay them back - or can't they afford it either?

How long before you would have the funds to pay them back? Let's face it, whoever you borrow from you'd have to pay it back, so the funds are presumably going to be available soon enough.
