Santander "active" direct debits ?

I have a Santander123 acc.

In its terms and conditions to get interest each month it states that I need to have at least two active direct debits.

I have two but next month due to having a large credit on my utility bill nothing will be taken.

Will this utility DD still count towards the two active DDs although nothing will be paid

Thank you.

  • You should be fine. I went for several months with my broadband account in credit and hence the DD not paying anything - and like you I only had one other DD. I still got my interest.
  • Active just means that they can be drawn on, as a direct debit becomes dormant after 13 months if it hasn't been used. Santander does not require the direct debits to pay out monthly like other banks.

I was once in a similar position, a refund on a credit card wiped out the rest of the charges in one month and my DD was NIL. That reduced my DD payments from two expected to one actual. That was with Bank of Scotland and I got no interest that month!

BoS requires the DDs to be paid out monthly to qualify for following months reward. Santander just requires DDs to be active - they don't have to pay out monthly..
