Windows live mail stopped connecting to Gmail

For the life of me I cannot get Windows live mail to download my Gmail account emails anymore. Nothing has changed except my password for Gmail which has nothing to do with Windows live.
If it helps I get this error:
Unable to send or receive messages for the Gmail (******) account. Header download for the 'Inbox' folder did not complete. The operation was canceled by the user.

Obvious question alert ... Have you updated your Gmail password in your Live Mail application account settings?0

Can you delete the account in your client and add it in again? (Back up any local emails first, just in case).0

I am not sure how to back up and did try to add the same email account again but the same error happened.0

Oh ... have you enabled 2-factor authentication in your Google account? (It might even be enabled as standard now). This usually requires you to go to a web page and enter an access code that Google have sent (either via text or by email) to you before that "device" is allowed to access your account.0

You may have to "allow less secure apps" in Gmail settings (accessed via web browser).

Also... Quite likely that Google is treating WLM as a non secure app (probably applied at password change time). Quite easy to test...

Thank you so much as this has solved the problem. Aso thanks to everyone else for the helpful suggestions. Much appreciated. The only error I got was it failing to connect to the windows calendar service but I don't use that.0
