  • Hello!

I’m currently on a DMP with PayPlan. And have been for a year. I’ve managed to pay off £9K our of £34K of debt this way and this has really helped me feel better.

My worry is this - In the past year I’ve had to do the following:
    1) reduce my payments from monthly DMP payment from £900 to £600 after a breakup
    2) take two one month payment breaks and pay just £1 per creditor a) to be able to pay to move in somewhere on my own b) just now December to pay for dental treatment

I’ve just been hit with £500 gas bill, after a massive mix-up with my provider so now I worry I’ll have to take another one month payment again to pay this off.

I don’t want to annoy my creditors or PayPlan who’ve been really agreeable so far.

What do I do? I’m really worried.

    (A) Your creditors do not get annoyed, it’s purely a business transaction.
Same applies to payplan, they realise life has its ups an downs.

    (B) Tell them what you need to do, then do it.

January 2020, 5 years since I began my debt free journey and prob an additional five years before that with my head in the sand.

Lots of ups and downs in the last five years but keep plodding away. I guess why I’m writing is as a prompt to myself to be reflective and acknowledge my progress and encourage those just starting out, that whilst at the start things look desperate, in the end it’ll be ok, just perhaps at the start it never seems like it will be ok.

I continue making payments to my DMP via step change via some creditors with smaller balances or their own internal reviews some have since closed. In late 2021 the majority of my defaults will drop off my file.

I don’t use the dropping of my defaults as the starting gun that I can go back out and obtain loads of credit but a bit of a mid point in this journey and the realisation that looking back things were ok and will continue to be - we’re all doing the best we can do and that’s good enough!

So for regular contributors thank you, for being ever present and sharing your experiences they help us all. For newbies, don’t worry, things will improve and a problem shared is a problem halved, everyday is a new day.

Be lucky and positive people well all get through this!

    (C) Health comes before creditors, in fact they only get paid if you are able to work

    (D) have you reviewed your budget, is it fair to you given change in circs - creditors will never refuse a higher payment of course but there has to be a fair balance c900/600 pm is a lot
  • Firstly, belated Happy New Year wishes to all posters and lurkers on this brilliant thread:beer:. I'm now debt free:j and the advice and encouragement from posters on here:A really helped me through some black times. I didn't post, just read about others' experiences and took lots of invaluable advice onboard.

To those just starting on your DMPs, well done on reaching the stage where you could admit (even if only to yourself) that your debt problem had become unbearable and then doing something about it:beer:. I know discovering that DMPs existed and signing up with Stepchange was the saving of me. My debt-free date seemed so far in the future (just under 7 years:eek:) I felt daunted at first but it passed quicker than I imagined, probably because all the gut-knotting anxiety had been taken away and I could begin to see things more clearly.

What I really came on here for is to ask if anyone knows or can point me towards where I can find out the list of which CRAs the various banks and financial organisations use/report to? I recall seeing this posted on one of the debt support threads on here, probably this one. It was a few years ago and I just can't find it anywhere.

    Any help gratefully received. Thanks:T
  • Hi could i get some advise please, is it best to let your accounts default before entering into a DMP, i'm just about to start the process but am very unsure.

Yes always, that’s the general advice, otherwise you risk arrangement to pay markers, once defaulted all interest and charges stop permanently.

AP markers stay on your file 6 years after accounts are settled, defaults drop off 6 years after default date.

I am losing heart right now. Not because we're not dealing with it, but because I want the move to go quicker so we can get it repaid. This really is an exercise in patience, of which I do not have much!
