PS4 & DVD playing

Options
I have a 4k TV in case it makes a difference to the answer here. This TV in fact...

I use my PS4 which i believe is this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01GVQVQH2/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item

On my invoice it says Sony PlayStation 4 500GB (D Chassis).

For some reason i bought mine at £216 from Amazon late 2016 but it's much more than that now

Anyway i've noticed the playback of DVDs look much better than they used to. Obviously they're not blu-rays or 4k DVDs so i wonder if this PS4 upscales the DVDs to 4k (or does something)?

When i try to search every result appears to be geared towards the PS4 being a PS4 Pro, which mine isn't so i can't find a suitable answer.

I'm going to be selling the PS4 but i like the quality it's given so would like to know what search terms i should look for in a suitable blu-ray/DVD player.

If you like it, why sell it and get a player only?? You're already getting Internet access/streaming services on the PS4 showing on the tv and dvd/playback and gaming, so wht go to something that does only part of that??

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Upscaling (which is the technical term for enhancing DVD quality to Blu-Ray type of picture) is performed by the player for the most part. Such a feature should be available in a bog standard cheap player but the results can be variable depending on the source and it will never be as good as native HD.

The PS4 has probably had a software upgrade at some point to enhance this but it was a feature of the PS3 originally and now the PS4.

That being said, if you don't use the PS4 for games use it for media playback and as an on-demand thing. You like the quality so if you dump it you run the risk of a replacement not being as good and only doing a third of the job that your current offering can do. Your choice but it doesn't seem a good idea.
  • Why sell it? Because i can get around £200 for it. I know if i was to ask its value on MSE i'd get told probably about £2.50 if i personally deliver it to the buyer but i've been watching what they sell for on eBay & the kind i have (upgraded to 2TB) can sell around £200, more with a wad of games.

To be honest i already do have a blue ray player. Nothing fancy, it's a Panasonic DMP-BDT280 https://www.panasonic.com/ca/consumer/televisions-home-entertainment/blu-ray-disc-players/dmp-bdt280.html Cost about £80.

Regards internet access & streaming services - i have a PC, a laptop, an iPad an iPhone and a smart TV for that.

I don't know all the jargon that goes with these things. I know HD is 'good' and that 4K is 'better'. I was just wondering why a PS4 would make a standard DVD seem better quality than a regular DVD player and whether it'd be worth getting a DVD player with [whateveritis] it enabled or not. Just out of curiosity really.

I'm actually perfectly happy with DVD quality. It's nice to have better and if i didn't have a DVD player already then it'd maybe be different for me.

The way i see it is i don't use the PS4 for games, i only use it for DVD watching & i have a DVD player in the bedroom that doesn't actually get used, so why not sell the PS4 while it's still worth something, recoup some money on it & put the DVD player to some use.

Correct but as i've been watching for the past few weeks i think it's safe to say that i can expect around that marker if i listed today whereas if i listed in say 5 years time i'd expect to not reach that amount :)
