Credit card not accepted

I paid the deposit on my daughter's wedding venue today (£500) and wanted to pay by credit card to a) to get some protection and b) to get the cc rewards.

The venue said they don't accept cc's for advance bookings (they accept them for meals, hotel rooms etc.) and when I explained why I wanted to use the cc as opposed to a debit card, they said that a) they advise people to take out cancellation insurance anyway and b) they would be within their rights to charge an extra 3% for cc which would probably outweigh any rewards I'd earn.

Is this true? I thought charges for cc use had been banned?

They would not be within their rights to apply a surcharge for payment by credit card unless it was a business card or the surcharge was applied to all other forms of payment too, but if they refuse to accept the card anyway then that's rather a moot point....

Yes, I realise that, but I was wondering if they would try charging a fee for using a credit card for the services they DO accept them for.
