Council house mutual exchange

Hi everyone. Hope this is posted in the right section..

Been wanting to move for well over a year and finally found someone interested in a mutual exchange. We handed in the forms recently and are awaiting a response about an inspection but I’m worried they won’t allow the swap as her house has been adapted for disabled people by way of a wet room and hand rails to the front of the property. The current tenant however is not disabled so I’m hoping they allow it.

It’s a straight two bed to two bed. None of us would be under or over occupying but like I say, it’s the adaptations that could prove troublesome. Anyone else done a mutual exchange into a house that was adapated for disabilities and had no issues with it? Thanks

  • I know that our council have a policy that if a house has been adapted for disability it has to remain available for disabled.
    You really need to ask your local authority
  • I’ll have to ask them then but like I say the current tenant and the one before her wasn’t disabled so I would appeal it if it was refused on those grounds.
  • We have the same problem. Trying to find out if skin cancer is classed as a disability. It is in in employment law, but cannot find out with regard to housing.

    Allocations policies have changed in my borough. Only people with medical conditions such as mobility or disabled people can bid / move into bungalows and adapted properties. Before the rules came into force, it was free for all.

    KPS - the previous tenant might have been there for 10+ years when rules were not as strict.

    Good luck though. Just ask your local housing office or the medical section in your local homelessness unit and they will be able to advise you better.
