Question about Insurance
Hi. I'm considering selling my car and make do with walking/public transport etc. Now obviously I would cancel my car insurance, which would be one of the financial reasons for getting rid of the car. But what happens if in the future I wanted to hire a car for a week? Would I take out a week's temp cover? And can anyone that already does this give me a rough idea of costs of this week's cover (to save me inputting all my details and getting harassed by companies)? For comparison, my current insurance on a 1.6 Diesel is approx £300 for the year.
Increasingly money-conscious

Car hire automatically comes with insurnace but they also offer extra insurance to reduce the excess etc.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Do not take the hire firms extra insurance, very expensive. Look up direct excess on google, good cover for a much lower price.0

Be aware that if you get a standalone policy to cover your excess on the hire car, having an accident will mean you need to pay the excess (potentially up to about a thousand quid) upfront, then claim it back from the insurer. Depending on the size if your savings account/credit card this may or may not be a problem. The advantage of taking the extra cover from the car hire company is that there's nothing at all to pay in the event od an accudent - but it's considerably more expensive than most standalone policies.0
