I normally buy cheese ready grated and just keep it in the bag it comes in an put it in the fridge but this time I took advantage the cheese offer in Lidl at the weekend and I was wondering what the best thing to keep the grated cheese would be.
I will keep the cheese in block form in its original wrapping until needed then just grate the whole block.
(I tried doing a search to see if the topic had been covered already but there were too many answers with either cheese or grated in the list but nothing about storage
)

What I do is buy a block and cut it into pieces that will fit into my type of grater. This usually means a 360g bag will get cut into four fat fingers. I have one where you turn the handle ... https://image.11st.my/g3/9/9/1/4/5/8/27991458_B.jpg
I then remove/grate one big finger into a plastic lidded takeaway box. The remaining fingers are pre-cut ready to be grated, but stored in their original bag ungrated in the fridge.
If I ever decide to freeze cheese (never needed to), this means, as it's already pre-sliced to fit my grater (done by eye), I can just chuck the original bag into the freezer knowing it's already portioned.0 -

That is just what I'll do as well, I have plenty of those containers in the cupboard and my grater is similar.

cheese will keep for a while in fridge well wrapped up, squeeze out any air, if it starts to go a bit blue just cut the bits off, (you could put them in soup), when it starts to go sweaty it's time for a cheesy beano, waste nothing.0 -
When I grate cheese, I grate the whole block and store what I don't use in a glass/pyrex/china bowl and cover with a plate or beeswax wrap. It doesn't last longer than a few days.
I also whizz up crusts of bread into breadcrumbs and put them in old takeaway tubs. I store them in the freezer.
It's then easy to top a lasagne, mac n cheese or whatever with a handful of breadcrumbs (they don't need defrosting) and a handful of grated cheese from the fridge. I always do this before reheating leftovers of these meals.0 -
I also use a glass Pyrex but mine has a plastic lid , I put a bit of greaseproof in then the cheese, if I've not grated the whole block the the cheese is portioned wrapped in greaseproof paper then foil.
I store some grated in freezer for cooking with.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
currently my son has sliced cheese sandwiches.
I was thinking of grating the block and storing in an airtight tub to take a bit out each day for sandwiches
However I am not sure if this will be MSE, do you tend to use more cheese when making sandwiches with grated rather than sliced?0 -

Definitely use less grated. Grate it finely and it seems to go even further.
