What's the cheapest way to buy a new car- online car buyer, broker, dealer etc?
I've never bought a new car before so never had to choose optional extras - which extras are the most useful to have?

Carwow allows you to build your car and then dealer's basically bid with their best price

  • Something I've always wondered about Carwow, if the best offer you get is from a dealer 100 miles away and you take it to a local dealer to ask if they can match it, how likely are they to say yes?
  • I got some prices from Carwow, the nearest wasn't the cheapest. After keeping quiet for a week or two the nearest has come back with better prices.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Carwow looks OK but begs one simple question.

You spec the car you want and the dealers come back to you with a price. Does that mean that they have that car in stock and, if so, is it a pre reg or will they order it for you and you have the normal 8 -12 week wait?

I bought a new car in 2013, a Ford Fiesta, I used orangewheels , I gave them the model and any extras I wanted , the dealer rang me to confirm the order, it was built to order so had a few weeks to wait, but it was brand new not from dealer stock..
  • Thanks for the replies.

The car is the unfortunately named new Peugeot Rifter.

I'm looking at the 130bhp diesel version for towing and overall power. It has a 6 speed manual or 8 speed auto gearbox - the auto does appeal but am I correct in saying automatic gearboxes are unsuitable for towing?

Has anyone used Carwow? The buyer chooses the car and spec then dealers bid for the order.

Not necessarily I tow with an Auto but you need to think carefully about what weight is suitable to tow. If you tow above about 85% of your vehicle weight then you may start to get problems.

On your model (diesel) the maximum towing weight is only 1,000kg (that is quite low) and the car weighs 2,100kg. I reckon an auto would be fine.

This is a useful website http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp

I think this is an excellent start to buying a car - how likely are they? Too much of a variable. I've had it done for me though. If they want to sell a car at that price, they will, if they don't they won't. Saves a lot of haggling though!

You're ordering a car from the factory. They'll contact you with offers from stock, ex demos etc.
  • The cheapest way to buy is simply the best deal you can get. How are you financing it, have you got a part ex? When I've bought new cars I've checked the brokers that I trusted and also rang round all the dealers that I could find that were independents as they seemed to offer better deals than the large franchises and were a lot easier to deal with.

I have been lucky in so much as I was able to sell my old cars privately and manage until the new car arrives and finance the new car with cash although I had to take out a small finance deal with a Ford to get the best deal.
