grass into pebble drive

ok, so we have a messy not done yet front garden, its all dead grass and weeds. i am thinking of making this a gravel type drive/area instead.

i would only want to make the gravel 2cm deep (purely financial big area to cover)
would it be a case of.. get rid weeds, weed control fabric pinned down, gravel on top and done?

would this be workable as a potential IF ever needed drive?(its not needed at the moment) thank you

I'm not sure how well that would stand up to vehicular use, should have hardcore base really. You can get plastic formers (forget the name) that sit on grass/mud - they work with just grass but you can likely use them with gravel.

Also check planning rules in your area, some have requirements for drives - mustn't allow gravel to spill on the road for instance (which would happen in your scenario), as a biker that can be really dangerous! drainage is another element they look at.

Coincidently this topic just came up on another forum I use - someone suggested https://www.matsgrids.co.uk/ (I'm not linked to them and haven't used them).

What you suggest is going to look awful quickly and will be a complete waste of money, even if you didn't drive on it!

Even gravel drives need digging out by several inches and a proper compacted hardcore sub-base laying.

If money is an issue then you can use the hardcore as your drive surface until you can afford the gravel to cover it.

Does the garden have a dropped kerb yet?
