at the moment currys are offering discounts for anybody that trades in a used laptop against a new one.
I asked them if they give discounts to those that don't have a old laptop to p/x they said no.
is this legal as surely they are discriminating/showing unfairness, inequity, favouritism, one-sidedness is this legal under the rules of fair trading.someone with trading rules and regs plz ?

It is perfectly fair!
If you are that desperate, just pick up an ancient free laptop on your local facebook selling group and trade that in.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Firstly, only discrimination based on a protected characteristic is illegal. Not owning an old laptop is not a protected characteristic.
Secondly, the old laptop has a value and forms part of the consideration. They are not getting a (for example) £700 laptop discounted to £500. They are getting a £700 laptop in exchange for £500 + an old laptop. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Its perfectly fine. Can you explain why you think:
its discriminating
it showing unfairness
it shows inequity
its favouritism
its one-sidedness
what is it with writing please as plz, that's text speak, don't you think using text speak discriminates against those who don't understand it.
What about any of the other trade in schemes eg the car one.0 -
Is the amount of discount related to what you trade in, and whether or not it is working? (Margins on PC hardware are wafer thin so Currys must be getting something somehow for the trade ins).0

Trade in FAQ

There's a certain amount of faults they will accept on a machine, it wont be accepted if its counterfeit or beyond repair.0 -
ok enough of the sarcasm I asked a perfectly reasonable question that I wanted a sensible answer too. I did not ask for the people that have made sarcastic replies.in answer to DCFC79 as for the car trade in schemes.I did buy a car recently and the dealership was offering a £3000 discount if I bought the car on pcp.I told them I didn't want it on pcp and they gave me the discount just the same, not quite the same as the p/x question but my point is still valid .so you see it's not always cut and dried as you want to infer. anyhow as a senior citizen in reply to pinkshoes yes as I'm living off a pension you could say I was "that desperate" thankyou0

ok if it's usual to be sarcastic to newbies on here and you consider the replies I have received have been "nice"sarcasm is not being "nice".
take note of the below comments and that's all.
Sadly new posters seem to be treated harshly more often than they used to. Often it's because they ask questions that have already been asked, or post in the "wrong place".
There's also sometimes a "this is our board" attitude which seems to not want new posters coming in and ruining a pre-established clique.
To be utterly clear - both of these go against the philosophy of this site.
MoneySaving should be fun. Everyone using these boards is here for the same reason, to save money. The site's motto is "Please be nice to other MoneySavers". If you see someone being rude to newbies, please report them to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
For this reason, newer forum users have a "newbie" image under their username when they post. We hope it helps other, more regular forum users be more tolerant of new users who may ask questions that seem obvious to them.0 -

Ask a silly question...
Seriously you asked fi them not giving a particular discount was 'discrimination' Discrimination is a serious issue for many people in this world, people DIE due to discrimination.
You not getting a few quid off a laptop because you had nothing to trade is is not discrimination.0 -

So, newish high-end laptop would equal large trade-in value. Low-end old laptop, if acceptable, would be the minimum trade-in. You can guess what trade-in value you would get if you didn't have a laptop to trade-in...
Finally, its not even a discount its a trade-in, so the original assertion is unfounded anyway.0 -

Well TECHNICALLY it is.
However it is legal.
And reasonable to anyone.0
