Possible small claims? How long?

How long do you have to give a tradesman to reply to a letter about fixing a repair?
Had a plumber out to install an ensuite last year, it's never been right but it's now leaking through my ceiling downstairs.
I'm writing to him to say I want it all fixed otherwise I'm going to small claims. But how long is reasonable to wait for him to respond to say whether he's coming to sort it? I was thinking 10 working days (so 2 weeks?)
(Ideally I'd rather get someone else in who will sort it but I read that I had to give original tradesman a chance)
