Re I cloud storage

Options
Hi Guys, I have just been notified that I have only 25% of free space left with my I cloud, on my iPad.
Is there any way I can get more without paying the 79pence per month for 50gb?
I am getting loads of photos of my new great grandson, which is taking up space, and want to keep them.
Is the 79p the best and cheapest option, not that I am stingy :rotfl:

  • Well, I've just Googled it and you can get 100GB of Google Drive storage for $1.99 a month, which I guess is about double the price of the Apple option for double the storage. So I guess it depends on how much storage you feel you will need. Dropbox seems to be more expensive at $0.99 for only 20GB. There are other cloud services specifically for photographs etc so I would just Google around and see what takes your fancy. If you have Apple devices though the iCloud price seems reasonable to me.

    Hi there,

Google Photos is your answer.... you can upload unlimited images in a slightly lower resolution or upload them in their native resolution but that would count towards their 15GB allowance.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

You can either pay Apple 79p per month for 50gb and not have your photos used to build an advertising profile on you to target advertising or you can pay Google nothing, store slightly degraded quality photos and have them build an advertising profile about you to sell advertising.

If you believe your personal data is worth more than 79p per month, Apple is the way to go.

    Thanks guys, much appreciated.
I have a google drive ac, with loads of photos on it, when I had a laptop.
Never tried downloading them to my iPad to view ?
    If it is possible?
    Not sure how!
Now I only use an iPad, seems like paying Apple.
79p ain’t gonna break the bank:)
Wife would not be too happy to lose photos of little legs!

    Put 'google photos' app on

In the 'Google photos' App settings select 'free up space'

The easiest solution is to subscribe to one of the iCloud plans and then switch on ‘optimise storage’ on both the iPad and iPhone. That way, your photos are all synced across your devices and full resolution copies are automatically removed from the device storage (freeing up local space) but the thumbnails remain. When you view a photo that has been removed from the device it is downloaded there and then from the cloud.

Am I correct in that my photos which occupies 5.6gb is actually stored on the hard drive of 16gb ?
Also the photos are only backed up to the cloud in case of mishap with iPad, they can be recovered.?
Do I have to instal google drive app, from Apple store to view my old g drive photos that I synced when I used laptop, which I no longer use.? Providing I can find password:)
I backed them to stick, but cannot play on iPad!
Is it wise to have iCloud and gdrive installed on iPad at same time?
    Sorry for multiple questions.
Not familiar with iPad as with pc.

  • All of the content you store on your device is stored on the internal memory whether that be 16gb, 64gb or 256gb etc.

When you subscribe to iCloud and turn on ‘optimise storage’ the vast majority of those 5.6gb of photos will be deleted from your device.

What will be left on the device is a thumbnail of the image and when you open to view the file it will download the full resolution from iCloud.

Think of iCloud as simply an extension to your device storage.

If you want to see photos uploaded to Google you will either need google drive or google photos.
  • When you have all of your photos stored on iCloud it doesn’t matter what happens to your iPad or iPhone. You could break/smash/lose it and when you got a new one, login to your iCloud account and all of your photos will be there.
