CVT boxes are generally very smooth as they are not actually changing gears but as the name implies are continuously variable. They do however have a unique characteristic in that when accelerating hard the revs stay the same as the car speeds up.

Edit: the very latest civic does now come with a CVT box.[/QUOTE]

That's not unique to CVT boxes. I used to do that quite a lot with my torque convertered XK8. It was a 5 speed version so there was a fairly wide speed range in each gear with the t.q. providing the continuous variability.

    errrr, its totally different.
  • I won't get into the best gearbox discussion except to say go for a LONG test drive plus drive a Ford with Powershift box which is now great as they have solved the earlier problems.
Main point I would make is to say get a hydraulic hoist fitted to lift your scooter into the boot as part of the deal before signing anything as the cast will be small, around £100. If you have it fitted later the cost will be nearer £1000!

The Civic has never had a CVT gearbox as far as I know, the previous generation had an automated manual gearbox which is reputably quite jerky unless you alter your driving style, this was changed for a torque converter gearbox in the newer ones.

Mechanically it's totally different but a torque converter still permits you to accelerate at constant engine speed.

When did you drive a Civic with a CVT gearbox, as wgl2014 states it is only the latest Civic that came out early this year that has a CVT gearbox and having driven several I can assure you that it is as smooth as silk.

Just to add that previous versions of the Civic had a conventional torque converter gearbox which while not as smooth as the CVT was also as smooth and reliable as any other auto gearbox, so I am not sure what you claim to have driven.

What I claim to have driven was shaped remarkably like a Honda Civic - it even had a Honda badge on it - so am assuming that, unless it was some cheap Chinese ripoff - it was a Honda Civic - and it was about 15 years ago !!
Honda used to use CVT boxes at the time

Have you driven a modern car with a CVT gearbox?

I have driven Honda's with them the gears are seamless and give a completely smooth and effortless ride compaired to other auto gearboxes.

CVT dont have gears as such. In its crudest form a CVT is a belt on tapered pullies, thats why it feels smooth, no gears to change.

That said the new 9 speed auto's are very smooth

There is a world of difference, a bit like comparing a 15 year old computer to todays computers.
