Barclaycard

Applied for the credit card as it had good deal on the balance transfer - got £400 sitting on a card with 22% interest, can pay off in 10 months now.

Got letter back from online application saying ok, willing to accept your app, just send in proof of identity - sent in a utility bill and a wage slip - i get paid fortnightly and only had one to hand as just in new job.

Received another letter back from them saying sorry but cannot accept you due to the documentation u sent does not meet our fraud preventation requirements. I did exactly as it requested on the origina letter and provided a couple of examples from the list.

Says I can reapply after six months!

Any idea why this happened or if its common excuse not to give a card?

I'm now stuck for ideas of where to apply - this debt can be cleared easily I just object to paying interest while I do so!

That's very unusual... best to ring them up and ask to speak to the new accounts department. Ask what exactly was wrong with what you sent in!

Only Barclaycard knows the answer. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve your chances next time ;)

You will have disrupted your credit rating temporarily by changing jobs. Lenders like stability, so best practice is to apply for credit cards before you move, change banks or change jobs.

The fact that you're not on the electoral roll also works against you. I would strongly advise you to enrol. It's free after all and everyone's credit score improves no end once registered. Plus you avoid having to send documents by post, as your ID can be checked electronically.

The good news is that neither of the above factors affects you permanently. If you type Credit Rating into the search tool above, you'll find lots of info' and tips on the main site. In particular, you may want to read Martin's How to Manage & Improve your Credit Score article.

OK - didnt realise that getting a new job affected credit rating.

Been on electoral role at this address for over 2 years, so not sure why u mentioned this?

Will give them a call and see what they say, was just wondering if anyone had been rejected for that reason before, seems extreme.

  • My husband got exactly the same letter yesterday. And he has good credit history, in the same job for 18 months, 2,5 years at the same address (on electoral roll too). There's nothing wrong with his credit file. He provided them with all documents they asked. We already wrote a letter to them to appeal against the decision.

I could understand other reason for rejection, but the line with fraud prevention system sounded very strange to me.

Are you sure the address on your credit card application matched your address as shown on the electoral roll and on your credit reports? (An extra line may be inserted/omitted if, for instance, you live in a block of flats or sometimes use a house name in addition to a house number.)

Have you checked your credit reports lately? This is the information UK lenders see when you apply for a new credit card (For help, see the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky.) In particular, I'd check your electoral status on your credit files. If this is recorded correctly, lenders can check your ID electronically and you should not need to send proof of identity through the post ;)

    Very best

When I applied for my Barclaycard they asked for ID to be sent in, even though I was on the electoral roll. Must be procedure?

My wife applied for a Barclaycard recently and she got the card without having to send in anything. The whole thing was done online.

Lots of us have been accepted by Barclaycard without the need for documentation.

You'd be surprised how frequently discrepancies arise on the electoral roll, so it's well worth checking.

Some lenders routinely reject applicants whose ID cannot be checked electronically.
