Ants Again

Options
Hi All,

we have always had ants to some extent when we moved into our house 6 years ago.

We had a pest guy in last may to put some basically Nippon gel around the areas which we seen them, which was mainly kitchen and certain part of our living room.
After wasting my money on that, we decided to inspect our integrated side of our kitchen, to find that they were living in our skirting board and made a nest in between the wood.
We ripped all that section of wood out and trying to spray death lac on them at the same time without them spreading to far again. We thought we were doing ok, and not seen any this year until last night, where i had noticed a part again of a section of our room skirting board is soft. With a little push an ant came out, followed by a few more, so we know they have nested there now.
Going again to rip the board off and hopefully the infestation will not be as bad as the kitchen one, because it dont seem as wide spread. We are going to replace it with plastic skirting and the question is after all this sorry, is where to get cheap ones in-store or online please?
Thanks

I have found ants in the bathrooms of a couple of rental properties. This has only been where tiles have failed allowing water in. I think you need to check for leaks, as I doubt ants would live there without some moisture.

Ths about the ants sorry, not the skirting [which out of interest I bought online in a previous house - I had coloured plastic kisrting, easiest job I ever did cutting and sticking those on and they didn't look too bad - don't know where from now though, I've forgotten ] but I had them in the porch and in the kitchen this year.
The porch ones were nesting in the UPVC frame and were coming in and out through the tiniest crack in the silicone sealant along the bottom edge of the frame. They were somewhat insulated from the outside because I'd put a few flagstones there that were broken until I could find a use for them elsewhere and there was also some kind of flower thing growing there. Ripped it up, moved the flags, put down Nippon, and they've gone now.
In the kitchen, they'd found the cupboard on the wall with the condiments and were marching in from out the back into the lean to, along the door frame and up the wall. Cleaned out the cupboard, put down the Nippon, again, gone/dead now.
If they are nesting behind your skirting board, they are coming in from somehwere so look outside if it's an external wall and see if you have any cracks in the render or whatever you have.

And as above, your skirting is soft? It wouldn't be without something that's eating into it whether that's damp or something else...Find out where the moisture is coming from.

  • Perhaps if you were to amend the thread title from 'Ants Again' to something that more clsoely reflects the question you eventually raise would improve the response to this thread.:)

Personally we have always found the use of Nippon and other well known Ant killer treatments to be very effective, both powders as well as gells.
If one fails to work, try another as we find some ants may become immune or at least wary of repeated use of the same product.
You don't need direct access to the nest; read and follow the instructions..
  • Sorry its just peeing me off because I thought I had them. Nippon powder was down when we did it last year and put all fresh down this year and traps. Only saying about pvc so it might get to them.

I've always used the liquid Nippon, pour a little bit on a bit of carboard or a plastic bottle top, less likely to be accidentally hoovered or blown around.
