When bogus applications are made

Hi. In the last few months I've received two notifcations (Grattan and Studio24) informing me of decisions to reject applications. In the first instance, I ended up talking to Experian and some other similar firm about the fact that someone other than me had made the application. The later incident, the retailer has noted the attemped fraud and said": "The application was for a personal account so no bank/credit card details were taken."

I worry that the attempted fraudster has my credit card long number. But perhaps they don't. I think about whether I should ask my credit card providor to give me a new card with a different long number. I wonder if anyone thinks that is advisable, or isn't necessary. Thanks. Rich

  • There's no reason to suspect anyone has your card details. Even if they had the long number, it wouldn't do them any good by itself.

If they had all your card details, they would be using it, rather than try to get poor quality catalogue accounts.

Hi.Well, firstly they have to get account acceptance. But if the company rejects the application they never get anywhere.

But, if the account was accepted, then they might venture?
  • The applications are designed to open new accounts that they control.
  • I wonder what would have happened if the account had been accepted. But, we'll never know I guess.

Why would anyone make an application if they could not provide all the credit card details?
  • They'd have bought a load of poor quality fashion clothing, not paid for it and a default would have appeared on your files,

You'd then have reported it as fraud.

  • Why would anyone make an application if they could not provide all the credit card details?

Why do you think they need your card details to make an application?
  • Penny just dropped on what you said. Of course you can order things over the phone and they would do that if they had all the details. Rich
  • I meant ,why would anyone make an application if they could not follow through with card details, when asked to do so.. Rich
  • They don't need your card details. They want the new line of credit.

Anyway, the main thing is, if someone had all my card details, they could just phone a retailer up and give the details over the phone. But, that is not happening. Applications are being made.

Point noted about new line of credit. Thanks.
