Mess up with cards... Argue the toss, get a new one, or add spouse?

My wife applied for a 0% spending credit card with MBNA, but now the bill has come through it's actually 0% on balance transfers, not spending. So we're getting charged through the nose.

I'm going to assume this was our error, even though I was pretty certain I applied for the right card. I can't find anything that would have shown my original application, only their confirmation once the card was sent [insert lesson on reading this stuff first].

So anyway... I've already got a 0% balance transfer card, but Sainsburys Bank won't allow my wife to transfer over her balance because it's in her name not mine.

Can we just add my name to my wife's credit card so Sainsburys can process the balance transfer? Or should my wife just get another 0% balance transfer card to shift the debt? We may also want to still get a 0% spending card, so that would be 2 applications in a short space of time...

Or should we be having the row with MBNA that they've given us the wrong deal? We used the comparison tool on this site, and Sainsburys came up top for both of us for balance transfers (which is why I've got that one), and MBNA came up top for purchases, which is why I'm very sure we applied for the right one. But this isn't exactly concrete evidence, and stands for nothing (unless MBNA want to hold their hands up to any error they may have made...).

adding your name to your wife's Sainsburys account (additional cardholder) wont make a difference

MBNA have purchase cards, balance transfer and All Rounder (that do both). I made this mistake with Tescos couple years back... my error so never pursued.

you should be able to transfer someone else's balance to your card without any issues.... Can you do the balance transfer request online with sainsburys? this usually only asks the card number and amount - no bling bit of difference who's name it is in.

try check you documents, if you still have them... check an email confirmation of the approved application... I received an email with the card I applied for from MBNA when I was approved in 2017...

    It's no evidence I'm afraid.

You didn't read what came through the post . Adding your wife as an additional cardholder on Sainsburys won't change the fact the account is in your name, there is no such thing as a joint credit card.

The only other credit card I have heard that don't allow transfers is Tesco. Have you tried doing the transfer to Sainsburys online?

Just for clarity - it would be adding my name to the MBNA card. So when Sainsburys want to do a transfer, the names match up. EDIT but if joint credit cards don't exist then this is a moot point.

Also Sainsburys dont do online transfers, and refuse to transfer anyone else's balance other than my own.

I have defo done an online transfer with Sainsburys
  • You're not adding your name.

You're becoming an additional card-holder on an already named account

So would that make the difference? The guy at Sainsburys was making it sound like 'computer says no' if it's a different name, but if I'm named on the card then wouldn't computer say yes?

The guy didn't even check, he just said a flat no - can't be done.

    This is what I'm getting:

  • MBNA have changed the rules on additional card holders just recently. I am an additional card holder on my wife's card. Up until last month I could request a balance transfer, money transfer and generally manage the account. All I can do now is make a payment off the balance.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • No you’re still not getting it

    You’re an additional card holder.

The account name is still the name of the other person

Sorry you're not explaining things at all very well.

It makes no difference if the account is in another name or whatever, if me also being a card holder allows the bank transfer to go through.

You haven't once said if that will stop me doing the bank transfer or not.
