Carers Allowance switch to Contribution JSA

Since careers allowance is paid for 8 weeks after the death of the person being cared for when would be the time the carer could apply for Contribution based JSA after the death? (They will have enough NI class 1 credits to be eligible for it) would they need to wait for the eight weeks to elapse or can they do it before?
Does contribution JSA now come under Universal Credit.

if you are in a full service Universal Credit area then you would have to claim 'new style JSA'.

    You can check here:

As regards the Carer's allowance and claiming new style or contribution based JSa then I am unsure how this works during the 8 weeks 'run on' period.

Contribution based JSA and Care's Allowance are overlapping benefits so you cannot claim both. Since contribution based JSA is more than CA then logic would say claim the JSA now and end the CA claim.

Whether they allow you to stop receiving the 'run on' of CA is something I don't know, sorry.

Hopefully someone may know the answer. Otherwise telephone the DWP or Carer's Unit and ask.
  • I should have made myself clearer.
We know that the two benefits can not be paid simultaneously the query was can you pre apply for the JSA knowing a date you will no longer be eligible for careers allowance?

Given that you only get contribution based jSA/new style JSA for 6 months it seems to make sense to make the most of the CA run on. I would suggest that you delay claiming JSA until near the end of this (but not sure whether that should be one week/two weeks before or on the day the CA runs out). I suspect pre applying may be difficult because DWP May say you could have found work by then. My best guess would be to apply on the day your CA ends provided you can cope if there is a slight gap in the actual payments.

Can anyone confirm how long it takes to make and set up a JSA claim?
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

2-3 weeks, or at least it used to be that.
