Still travelling but need to pull in the reigns...

Hey guys. How are you?

I have now hit New Zealand and am currently in Auckland & really need to pull in the reigns financially.

I travelled to Thailand for 2 months which was fab and budgeted for, however, I needed emergency root canal work and a crown on a tooth back in Sydney, well over a thousand pounds (thankfully travel insurance covered 300 hundred!)... but still!! Not sure which was worse, the pain, or the cost!!

It got me thinking, and how that would screw most people up financially - even the financially savvy ones out there. It has certainly made things a bit difficult and tight for me, thankfully I found a job here pretty quick an am housesitting at the moment which is saving me $$$!! I am hating knowing that I have next to no savings left, I wonder how the hell I coped when I was up to my eyeballs in debt??!!!

It goes to show that things do happen out of the blue and we can only have a certain control over our finances!! It is making me stressed just thinking about it. I wonder if I will always need a "buffer" amount there to stop me from panicking! I can see how easily it would be for me to have fallen into debt again, and that is one scary thought!!

Just thought I would say hi anyway. It doesnt feel like it is almost Christmas but I hope you all have a fab one and try not to spend too much money!!

Take care,

xx

    Hi Ms London

Good to hear from you... Its gutting to pay so much for something you have so much pain for......

Glad to hear you are doing okay though. Despite the root canal work:rotfl:

It was also good to have your thoughts on debt, some people looking on might think that we are all foolish to have ended up in so much debt, but sometimes things in life come along that we have no control over.

You can plan only so much in life, the rest we just have to deal with.:o

I think this just goes to reaffirm how far you have come in your "journey" - not the round the world one, but the debt/life one.

The reminder that you need to be ready for anything has popped up, so you adjusted your way of thinking accordingly - and that is a habit that you have learned through hard work over the last few years, and which is staying with you for the future.

Enjoy NZ, keep on posting - we love to hear how you are getting on!! You are, after all, one of the very first inspiriational DFW'ers!!

Hi ms_london - you CERTAINLY know how to make us all jealous - it's a cold and foggy morning down here.

Sorry to hear about the Dental Work - In a way it's kind of reassuring that the UK is not the only country that charges an arm and a leg for dentistry work, but that doesn't help you - I know.

Perhaps you can get a bit of temporary work in Auckland to help 'replenish your coffers.

    Have a GREAT time.

    Ouch....root canal.....*shudder*

Glad you are still enjoying your travels, I would love to go to New Zealand. I've got family over there, and it just sounds like an amazing place.

Having a buffer in place is great, although when something comes up that means you need to use the buffer, I find the panic is almost as bad as not having a buffer in the first place. I obviously need to get myself a much bigger buffer......now where did I put that lottery ticket!

Hey Ms London great to hear from you, I wish I was in NZ we had a few weeks there last year and it was amazing. I am sure you will see some spectacular sights. Sorry to hear about the tooth problems painful both physically and financially.

Having a buffer certainly works for me, it's like the stash of tins in the food cupboard so I know there is always something to eat, I like to have some money put by in case of emergencies, accessible but not too accessible so there is a temptation to spend it.

Anyway enjoy your travels and keep popping back here to let us know what you are up to!
