credit search, british gas/edf energy

Hi,

It's me again, I know I'm such a pain

I have been British Gas customer since 2003, I was on credit meter, except for a time I was away etc, and they doubled the bill with court costs etc and put me on CRA as they do. The debt was finished two years ago on prepay.

I have a fair credit rating and well managed anyway;

I spoke to British Gas this afternoon and they declined me for credit meter !! But I called EDF and the lady took my bank details and said it'd take three weeks etc.

My question, didn't they both search my credit file? If so, why British Gas let me down after 15 years and EDF accepted me?

Will EDF show on credit file? I don't mind anyway if I keep up with monthly payments, it would even look good in my opinion.

Thanks,

  • Your files will show if they searched or are reporting.
  • You don’t have a credit rating

    BG obviously don’t want you as a customer with the previous history
  • Ignore your credit scores as they are basically meaningless. Every lender calculates their own internal score based upon the contents of your credit file, so what matters most is your credit history. Recent searches will be included on your credit report, so have a look at your reports from all three CRAs to see if the energy companies have been searching your files or not. Also remember that different CRAs might have different information as not every lender reports to every CRA, so if BG uses one agency and EDF uses another, they will likely paint a different picture of you based on these different pieces of information.

    As you have previous dealings with BG, then this will likely be included as part of you application with them. They have likely decided that based on your previous history with them, you are too risky to deal with. EDF on the other hand, haven't dealt with you before so can only use your credit file to make judgement, which is likely why you were accepted
  • Thank you all,

    Couldn't agree more, you're right, because of previous history with BG.

    EDF have started the switch, takes about three weeks, I'm happy after all :)
