PIP assessment - off to a flying start

I got a date last week for my dla-pip assessment. It was due to fall on the last day of my holiday, so I called them and asked for a postponement. I also asked for a change from an assessment centre to a home visit, as the centre is in Belfast City centre and I would have difficulties making my way there. I was offered another date for a home visit, which would fall on the first day of my holiday. So I was told, no problem we'll organise another date and the letter should be waiting when I get home. Which it was. Except its for an assessment centre again. So I rang them and asked for the appointment to be changed to a home visit. This was refused as I am only allowed one cancellation. I argued that it isn't a cancellation, just a change of venue. But no, it would still require a cancellation. They say there is on street parking outside the assessment centre, but a mid-afternoon appointment in any city centre guarantees an almost zero chance of getting a parking space anywhere close to the centre.

So it looks like my relationship with the mighty Capita has gotten off to a flying start. I have no doubt now that, as my main disability is severe mobility related, managing to even make it to the assessment centre will result in my application being turned down.

  • If you need a home visit, I'd try calling them again, explaining that you were supposed to have a home visit as you did on x date, but they've accidentally booked you into the assessment centre, and keep your fingers crossed that you're talking to someone sensible this time.

Yeah I did specifically ask for a home visit the first time I contacted them, and the lad I spoke to said it wouldn't be a problem. But its Capita we're dealing with here, not some ridiculous, sensible, forward thinking crowd.
