Redidrive Rawl plugs loose

Hi

I have a blind that has 4 parts to the bracket.
2 end bits. Secured vertically with redidrive Rawl plugs and normal screws
2 middle bits secured by screws
The fixings are secured vertically

I had to take the blind off to do some painting. But when I go to put it back on the redidrive Rawl plugs are not securing. They just keep turning around as if the hole is too big. I'm thinking of the following options:

1) filling the holes with filler and then trying again
2) putting in small bits of wood to make the hole tighter
3) using a grip filler
4) using wet and drive repair pads

Any help would be much appreciated

Gavin

Are these plasteroard fixings or just normal rawlplugs?
Normal rawlplugs, get a cocktail stick and stick it in the hole, and snap off at the edge, do this a few times until the hole is smaller, stick a rawlplug back in and screw away....that's the bodge it and see method. That works better if you're screwing into wood, not so much with normal walls becaause it can pull out since there's not enough friction to keep the cocktail sticks in, you're just relying on a wodge of material keeping the rawl plug in place.

Fill the holes with filler, sand, paint, re position the screw holes to the left or right, that's the non bodge it and see method.
Get bigger rawlplugs and a bigger screw, also non bodge it method but more unsightly depending on the covering for the screws..

If they're plasterboard fixings, you'll have to reposition them and fill sand and paint the old holes. You won't be able to fill the holes and keep them in the same place because the board has been weakened and will just crumble if you attempt to fill and place in same position.

Depends what your wall is made of :)
Ah I see it's probably plasterboard...[ceiling fixings?] so last method....Although...I have a bay window that I needed a curtain track fixing to the ceiling [not enough room to do it above the windows due to the design of the bay] so I found the batons that form the top of the bay ceiling and screwed into those. With rawlplugs...

  • Thank you.

    Yes it's plaster board.

I guess that means I have to reposition all of the screws for the whole bracket.

Having blinds isn't the best. When you're pulling the pulley string you're applying so much downward force.

What about grip it fixings? They look very good.

Is this above the reveal? How much of a gap is there between the plasterboard and rsl/lintel. If you have space, I'd use hollow wall anchors.

I would be inclined to squidge some filler into the holes, then shove in the Rawlplugs before the filler has time to set. Then wait until the filler has fully set before putting the screws in.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • On solid walls I sometimes knock a smaller plug into the loose one then screw into that, very effective. Hollow wall you usually have to get a larger hollow wall fixing. If the lintel / RSJ is so close you can't get a deep enough fix you usually end up having to stick a slim timber batten up. Shallow plugs don't hold for long with blinds.
