Passports can't add remaining months on

Options
I had previously read on Martins Money tips that 9 months can be added onto a new passport. I've just applied for my son's new passport, even though the old one didn't run out until well into 2019. I thought I do it now as we've been on this summer's holiday and I thought it would be a quiet time for the passport office. Unfortunately, the 9 months carried forward rule doesn't apply anymore and I've basically wasted about £10 applying too early! I think something should be said about this so others don't rely on old info and apply too early.

Is the son moving from child to adult passport?

I can't find it either...but I can't find where it says up to 9 months will be added either (but I am on my phone so maybe I've missed it).

Another post elsewhere said that you don't get the extra time added on if you apply early.

So apply with only 9 months left and you get that 9 months added on.
  • It appears to be the case that the government have quietly removed the process that allows you to apply early and get up to 9 months added on.

It must have only just changed then, because I got the extra added on at the end of June.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Just had the wife's returned today and expires 7 march 2029 so the time is still added.

I must admit when I saw the other thread I also searched for the 9 months add on gov.uk and couldn't find it anywhere. Merry's post seems to suggest that it is still happening but I guess they can now stop doing it and nobody can complain.
  • As of yesterday no extra validity is added on an Adult 10 year or Child 5 year passport.

Thank you for joining MSE to confirm that - what is the basis for your statement? Have you perhaps seen a document, or work for the agency?

  • Any passports issued from 10th September onwards will be valid for 5 or 10 years only. This keeps up with civil aviation regulations. The UK was the only country that added extra validity onto passports.
