Picked up a Q Acoustics M2 soundbase from John Lewis today, connected it to tv with HDMI cable to TV Arc HDMI as recommended, it woks ok, tv remote controls volume. I have a 2gb hard drive connected to usb on TV, it’s got loads of films on it. For some reason with this soundbar you only seem to get the sound with MP4 or MKV format files, AVI only plays the picture. I seem to remember with the old Denon Soundbase everything played ok. I tried it with the Digital Tosh cable instead and it was still the same. I don’t really understand why it won’t play the sound on them. If I disconnect the soundbase and just use TV speakers it all works fine. I like the soundbase, but It’s no good if it’s fussy with what files it plays. Anyone got any ideas before I take it back.

It might be a sound setting on your TV (even though you're using a soundbar) going off the following thread:

I’ve looked at the menus on the tv, only thing I can see is a choice of sound on TV, Headphones or Off. It has to be off when soundbar connected. I’ve completely disconnected it now and just using tv speakers. All the films that wouldn’t play on Sondbar work fine through tv. Handbook with Soundbar recommends connecting with hdmi cable supplied to ARC HDMI on tv, which let’s tv remote control volume. Alternative is tosh link, tried both with same result of no sound on some films, mainly all AVI format. I don’t get why tv plays them ok and this soundbar won’t. I’m sure my old Denon used to play them all, before if packed up. It’s a good job I bought this from John Lewis as returning something is easy. Just unsure now if this could be an issue with another soundbar, as I can’t keep returning them. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thanks for that, I have decided to return it to John Lewis and get my money back. From what I’ve been told it’s something to do with the soundbase not being able to decode certain file formats. It has no problems with dvds, it’s just the films I have on my hard drive. I may find this problem with other soundbar, but will do more research on the next I buy. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
