Charged twice for same goods

I had the same thing recently with Starbucks.... Nationwide initially refused to help saying that the charge had been authorized twice via PIN entry and that I should take it up with Starbucks. Fortunately Starbucks were able to pull up the report from their card transactions, and it was listed in their report twice. This made it easier to obtain a refund, and finally obtained one about 3 weeks later. Be patient but persistent with Wickes at the same time.0

Not necessarily. I was boarding a coach once, and tried to pay by credit card, but when the hand-held machine tried to print the receipt, its battery died and no receipt came out. I then paid my coach fare in cash, but later discovered that the credit card transaction had gone through as well. The machine would have still printed off a transaction void or accepted receipt.
If you think the manager in Wickes will process the refund then you have no issue
I wrote to the coach company explaining what had happened, and they transacted a refund to my card - no hassle at all.
I presume the same could happen if the system crashes between authorising a transaction and printing a receipt.0
