Would you work 7 days a week to pay off debt?

  • Absolutely if you can work the two days from home. I've worked two jobs and picked any extra overtime, babysitting etc basically anything to earn extra cash to pay the debt off. I know now if I hadn't done all that overtime, I wouldn't be debt free yet. The relief of bit owing money is amazing and personally I'd do it all again if I had to. The stress of owing money for me was worse then working all the time-I felt I was being productive and if I did have a day off, I thought about the money I could be earning! I had to miss out on a lot of social things, but I was never there mentally anyway...now I am! The freedoms when debt free is much more worth it for me.

Could you not try if for a few months and see how you get on? If your feel it's too much at least you'll of earnt abit of extra cash to throw a the debt.

In the end, it's your choice.

    Good luck
  • No. Life is too short to spend everyday working.[/QUOTE

Thing is though, a lot of those things we do to enjoy that life cost money and it's working these extra hours that allow us to do it without incurring high debt levels.
I've worked 7 days a week and it's hard going but worth it.
  • (Personally) Not a chance.

Guess it depends on your commute time to primary job and hours of existing work - at the moment I find for a job 20 round trip miles away in another town and just strictness of being 'early into the workplace' that alone adds nearly 2 hours to the start of day. But least I'm not doing much except making connections and walking into place of work.

I've no idea in modern times how extra jobs sit with main employer - every employment contract I've seen requires permission to work other jobs these days. Another place which was was minimum 50 hours a week and just so intense that I actually felt rather beaten (fortunately)(and to change those hours 3 months notice which would have ended the job having not been there long with no protection) £19,500 for an 206 hours per month wasn't worth loss of time, let alone think of a sideline! Anyone who gets an additional job or work more hours needs to have the right circumstances so it's very subjective.

One thing I learnt was if potential employer pulls a face there is good reason. Perhaps you should ask them.

As it happens, the two days over the weekend would be at home so I could be as comfortable as I wanted in my office etc, but I'd still lose 8 hours each weekend day. But the pay would be worth it? I just can't decide...I've got an interview for the 2nd job. I don't want to impact my current job but I also really want to work for the 2nd company because they're pretty innovative. I have a son so thats my other issue

In the situation you describe here, yes I would.

In other circumstances, eg horrible 2nd job, 2 days more commuting (taking more time up etc.), no I wouldn't.
  • I have done and I know loads who do. In my trade, decorating, working weekends is a regular thing. I did it last year to pay off the rent and council tax arrears my ex ran up and to get us back on a even footing. Come Christmas though I was exhausted so this year I have only worked 4 weekends

I have done. Worked full time in a professional job and then worked every evening and weekend in 'part time employment. Workiny 50-60 hours a week. I wouldn't do it now though as I have children. I would definitely work some extra hours though.

I did find that my full time job (in education) suffered as a result as because I couldn't put as much effort in to my planning. Maybe something to consider when choosing a 2nd job.

  • Really would depend on how long I would have to do that for
  • The thing is, it's easy sitting here typing saying 'I'd do it for six months' and then stop but there would just be the incentive to say, one more month just one more month...

  • I have done it. Worked full time, had an evening cleaning job 5 evenings a week and 2 shifts in a pub at the weekend. Exhausting but worth it to pay off debt and have a life.

I still have a full time job but now just work ad hoc evenings and weekends if needed to cover shifts for a bit of extra money.
