Incorrect default posted on credit report? Panicking!

Hi all. My partner and I are planning to apply for a mortgage shortly. Yesterday I checked my credit rating after a few months and was shocked to see that it has fallen from excellent to poor. After some investigation I discovered that this is due to NPower recording 4 missed payments. However, I have a prepayment meter with them and have not received any communications to inform me of any money owed.

I am assuming that this is an error, and when I spoke to NPower earlier today the call assistant seemed to think the same. However, they will not remove the default from my credit file until an investigation has taken place, which I was told would take up to 30 days. In the meantime I'm a bag of nerves worrying that maybe it isn't an error and I do owe them money, in which case my hopes of acquiring a mortgage are in ruins. Can anyone please advise/ reassure me that:

1. Surely I can't have missed payments for a prepayment meter?

2. Even if the debt is indeed correct, shouldn't I have received some communication to make me aware of this before adding a default to my credit file

3. Is it pointless to contact them to try and expediate the investigation and get the default removed sooner?

I should point out that I have lived at this address before 4 years and have never had a previous account with NPower at any other address.

Thanks for your help.

  • Let them investigate it. It’s all you can do.

If they decide to remove it afterwards then great.

If not raise a complaint and contact the Ombudsman
