  • Presumably these issues with ''federal law'' don't exist in Canada?

They dont in this case, because it's the Canadian federal parliament in Ottawa which has changed the law throughout Canada.

What would be your opinion on the HMMJ ETF?
GW Pharm is one of their 39 holdings (the only UK holding).

Like many ETFs, it seems to be limited regarding how many 'retail' fund platforms offer it - maybe due to the KIID restrictions?

At about 0.75pc, it seems a bit expensive.

I'm guessing as a UK investor, if you can't buy the ETF, you'd need to buy the underlying holdings?
The Toronto exchange should be accessible via several UK stockbroker platforms. I'd guess the ETF doesn't have UK reporting status, so there will be tax implications you'd need to understand. 0.75% isn't all that expensive to track a very niche industry via a fund like this - probably a lot cheaper than the transaction costs to buy the constituents assuming you aren't betting the farm on this.
  • Also, what makes you think we've an authoritarian system?

Tightest censorship in the Western world, it is illegal to sell videos that haven't passed state censorship (Video recordings act 1984)

More CCTV than rest of EU combined

New laws coming into place this year that'll impose strict limits on UK based adult websites

    Why do you care?
How about political freedom? Nicola Sturgeon would be in prison if she were Catalonian?
Anyone conscripted in your street in the last 60 years or so?
According to today's guardian, some Spanish bloke has been arrested for ridiculing the Virgin Mary.

In anticipation of legalisation you could invest in the infrastructure of production and consumption.

i.e. Head shops, coffee shops, grow shops... industrial hydroponics.

Which would do well may be a complex matter. If cannabis is legalised, some of the underground cultivation costs could be reduced.

And, in any case, you can buy pretty much everything you need to grow your own on Amazon already. Try searching for "grow tent" for example.

Not really, as if legalized there will be a difference in regulation of growing for retail sales and personal use. So the ones growing to sell will have to follow different/more expensive rules. Labor costs will go up, and they wont be able to use trafficked workers.

The price of a plant that is easier to grow than strawberries will collapse. The whole business model is at present based on the fact that the production and sale of the goods are illegal, creating a scarcity value. A probably enormous increase in supply will of course lead to a drop in price, possibly a cataclysmic one. Check the price change in Oregon on line since legalization - everyone with a patch of ground and a watering can got into the game.

    Does anyone actually understand this?
  • The price of plant itself maybe plummet when it is completely legal, but marijuana products like marijuana tincture will have their price high, since making these products requires a lot of know-how.

Oh I don’t know about being high. I’m quite relaxed about it.
