Note though that irrespective of who deals with your claim, you now will have this loss/claim recorded on your file (and the insurers shared data base) and must disclose it to future insurers you approach for quotes
Is this really the case? I was the victim of a hit and run and claimed (as a third party) from the driver's insurance for bicycle repairs and the bus fare to work while it was getting fixed. Should I have informed my household contents insurer as the bike was theoretically covered? These are two different types of insurance, motor and household. I'm assuming you don't mention motor insurance claims when getting a quote for household insurance or vice-versa?

You experienced a loss over your bike (it was either covered or it wasn't - not "theoretically"!)

So if you were asked about any losses when applying for household insurance you should have disclosed this (insurers normally ask for your history ovr the previous 3/5 years)

Normally no need to disclose motor insurance claims (or travel insurance etc) to household insurer and vice versa

It is a while ago now, but when I spoke to an insurer about it, they said my RTA claim was not relevant as a past claim for a household policy. I think it was Bank of Scotland.

Now first up! A huge thanks for all of you who provided guidance to this question. We got the result!!!

The askMID web site did indeed cost us £4.50 but what a £4.50 well spent. One of you mentioned it's free on a smart phone but I'm still on a 2003 Nokia ! :-) .... refuses to die!

As you may recall, we had video data, we had stills, we had a Police report.

The Police decided not to pursue. Why? Purely because it was not a road safety/legality issue ... poor driving yes but our wall and loss aside it was not an issue for them. I can understand their point .... limited resources etc.

They did however send the name, address and reg of the driver.

Have to confess we left the issue and lost interest a while. But re-reading the thread and your response .... very early last Sunday morning I did the adkMID inquiry.

AskMid came back within maybe 3-4 days with the company and policy number.

I called the company concerned who were very helpful. They confirmed the details, confirmed it was one of their vehicles and customers and said they would look into.

Within 24 hours, they came back with the best news imaginable.....they agreed the case and would escalate to the next level. Impressive service indeed. No push back, very professional.

Now payment has not been made yet but it looks like just process now.

So the advice given by you all here absolutely was vital to getting claim to a happy place. I owe you all a beer.

A huge lesson for me, some great learning and in future I will be being way more diligent on such insurance matters having passed over many such potential claims in the past!

A super result and super advice from all of you who needless to say I have clicked thanks on each and every post!

    A super result. Cheers
