If the caller display says international, I answer in Russian... they hang up.

If it doesn't, then I grunt ... and hear their voice; if they're Indian sounding, I put on an Indian accent, they soon hang up as they can't understand me. If they don't sound Indian, then I put on a general fake deep European accent ... and they can't understand me, so they soon hang up.

None of that will actually stop your spam calls from continuing, of course.

BT call protect 1572 has been very effective for me. Only about 1 call a month gets through the filtering now.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.
  • Unfortunately this will not make much difference to all those calls from out of area or from overseas
  • Just now had a call from "Katie" at 0113 121 4567 saying she was from Smile Services and checking the details of my recent non-fault accident. When I said I had no idea what she was talking about she brought a manager (name mumbled) on to take over the call. When I said to him that his call was illegal (new rules, TPS as well) he said they were not trying to sell anything but merely checking the database records.

Weasel words. I told him I was reporting the call and have done so to the ICO. https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/

They will find a way around it, and bank on the fact that most people are gullible and don't have the knowledge or energy to argue or report them.

You realise the call will very likely originate from a foreign call centre?

If, as I suspect, the call comes from abroad there will be nothing the ICO will be able to do about it.

Why should I have to be with the most expensive telephone service out there just to stop spam calls.

The only reason the other providers let it happen is so they can make thier cut from the call fee.

  • 8 calls in one day yesterday, this is the most ever from different numbers clearly the new rules are already being ignored.

I tried to report them on the link but it only lets you report one number at a time and I don't have time to do this form 8 times.
  • The fair telecoms campaign had the opportunity to lay out its views and position through the media - see "Media coverage of a government announcement about Nuisance Calls made on Saturday 8 September 2018" in the media / docs section of our website.
