To buy or not-a house for the sort-term

I've spent many years renting, and now I am in a position where I can buy, I have desperately wanted something that was mine for so long.
I have a 10 mile/40 minute commute at the moment so the thought of actually living close enough to walk to work is very appealing.
However-I'm not sure that I will stay in my job long term, my thought is that in the next 12 months I will look at moving up the career ladder, and I would willingly move anywhere in the country that would enable me to do this.
I don't have a crystal ball thought, my plan depends on the right job becoming available at the right time, and of course me being successful.
There is always the chance that the company I work for would want me to progress with them.
I'm interested in peoples thoughts on this, would you buy now, or wait?

If I thought there was more than a 10% chance I'd be moving in a year I wouldn't contemplate buying. Never mind the cost it will make moving to your new location much more complex.0
