What do you stir your food with when cooking?

Was cooking alongside someone earlier. Noticed we used totally different utensils to stir the mince and onions in the frying pan.
Just wondering out of curiosity what other people would use to stir stuff in a frying pan or wok and why?Plastic/metal/wood or what? Or do you use different for different foods?

Depends what I'm cooking. Wooden spoons for some things (sauces etc), a silicone spatula for scrambled eggs in my non-stick pan, a wooden spatula when I want something a bit more scrapy, like when I'm cooking porridge.

Nah, you should always use a Spurtle for porridge, and only stir widdershins - natch.

I use stainless steel but don't have coated pans. I used to have decent wooden spoons until I found they were being put in the dish washer.
  • I prefer wood mostly. I find scorched easier to recover than melted! And hate the metal on metal sound.

  • I use wooden spoons. I have one each from my deceased parents' kitchens that I use, and love the connection with them through shared love of food, and the rhythm of everyday domesticity.
  • Wooden spatula for stir fry, silicone spatula for custard & sauces, wooden spoon for making cakes/biscuits
