How does one continue cooking etc when you're house is being wrecked!!

If there are children, I think it would be quite difficult, but as two older people with no offspring at home, that side of things wasn't too bad. We had 4 'kitchens' while gutting and re-shaping our bungalow, but the cooking was just the guts of an integrated oven on bricks + a portable grill and camping stove; easy enough to shift around.

Like you, we wanted and had planning for a kitchen extension, but with all the other work desired, including re-roofing, we doubted we could pay for it.

In the end, the design we arrived at used the garage instead. It wasn't much of a problem as we have a 60' barn. By shifting the interior walls around, we were able to use the space we had much more efficiently, so although there were a few compromises it worked out OK....and it's paid-for!
