Incorrect default date

I had a credit card with Capital One which defaulted in January 2014. The debt was sold to Cabot Financial and it now shows as defaulted in January 2015 on my credit report which is when they bought it rather than the original default date. I have tried to raise a dispute about this through Experian but nothing was done. Am I right in thinking it should be the orginal default date of January 2014 that shows on my credit report even if Cabot bought the debt later? Thanks

Hi Misshl84 and welcome to MSE,

The debt collector is allowed to register the default in their own right, but it should be the original default date. If they have not done this then make a formal complaint to Cabot asking them to amend the entry. If they refuse then escalate the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service and Information Commissioners Office.

I agree with zx81 to check what is showing on the other two credit reference agencies as well.
