Laptop for Media Production

Options
DS is about to start a media production degree and I want to buy him a laptop. He has emailed Uni but they haven't got back. Should he get a Windows or a Mac? And will he need anything fancy or will most of the technical stuff be provided by the uni? Many thanks pin advance for any advice. I'm not very tech savvy.

Software that used to be exclusively available for Mac in this field is now available on Windows. It will need to be fairly powerful if he's going to be doing a lot of video editing on it.

He needs to contact the uni and see what specs they require for the course. If they don't reply to emails then call.

I would add that a laptop is not really the best type of machine for video editing, especially if there is to be a lot of it.
Ergonomically a desktop or tower pc with full size keyboard mouse or ball with a large and high resolution monitor and separate good speakers are ideal. It goes without saying access to a good printer and dvd reader/writer is very desirable.

However a media production degree is not all about editing video it is about learning a lot about all sorts of media and production requirements and methods with academic parts too for which a top of the range would be wasted.

Although you want to get set up for your son's degree it would be worth waiting to see what is actually recommended for the course either from their response or once he attends and can ask a tutor then get what he needs rather than guess. It may be that where editing and similar activities are involved the uni will have it's own editing suite for use.
