Struggling to get a Skip removed

Morning all,

Hoping for some advice.

We've had an extension done recently and when about 95% done with the work, our builder did a runner, ceased all contact and we've had to repay tradesmen to complete outstanding jobs.

One thing still to sort is the skip he arranged for us is still on the drive, annoyingly with no company name or number on. I've tried ringing all local skip companies as well as all the ones local to where the builder lives to no avail. Is there anything I can do to get this skip removed. Ideally avoiding paying for another company to take it away, though I appreciate that may be our only option.

Thanks for your help!
S

Contact your local council to see if they had a permit for the skip (not sure if one would have been needed) if it needed a permit they would have the details of the skip company.

Also ask around any neighbours, maybe one of them was in when it was delivered and they remember the company name.

OP says its on their drive, which doesn't require a permit.

OP - do any of your neighbours have security cameras that might have picked up the lorry and any details on it when the skip was delivered?

The skip company normally charges for the length of time it's there.
My couson had this problem and ended up paying a friend with a skip truck to drop it in the middle of a main road where the authorities had to deal with it.

  • In my experience, the skip companies charge according to the size of the skip, not the length of time you have it. And I've always had to pay up-front (which means the skip company has had their money, so no huge incentive for them now - although of course they've lost their skip!).

Rather than ringing, try emailing the companies - on the phone they're likely to just say it's not theirs in order to get rid of you, whereas an email stands a chance of being escalated up to someone who actually can be bothered to deal with it. Bit of a long shot but might be worth a try.

Presumably disrupting traffic and costing the council taxpayers money.

    Nice one.

I hope your cousin and his pal got found out.

Do you know any of the other suppliers the guy used? Perhaps you could ask them if they know him and who he uses for skip hire?

  • Have you asked other local skip companies how much they would charge you to remove it? As they'll be gaining a skip, it might not be as much as you expect. Certainly worth asking the question.

When we hired a skip we had to pay up front on a card and it needed to be collected within a week otherwise we would have had further charges weekly on the card.

I wouldn't expect any reputable skip company to take away a skip that they know doesn't belong to them.
If they did and then they kept it, it would be theft on their part.
